Meet Interim Principal Fred Willig

We are excited to welcome our Interim Principal, Fred Willig to our school staff for the year. We are thankful that Mr. Willig unretired to serve the families and students at St. John this year. He says, “I gave up my ‘choice time’ to help Mr. Kerr. Then he retired and offered to help me.” Mr. Willig has been told not to “break” the school, but he says, “With a great teaching staff in place, St. John will be fine.”

Fred graduated from Concordia University Chicago (River Forest) and taught math and science at Nassau Lutheran Elementary School in Long Island, NY. He was then called to Lutheran High School of Indianapolis to be the math department and start the drama program with then principal Ken Wunderlich.

Fred and his better half, Cheryl, our Kindergarten teacher, have 2 children. Both children are married and one has two sons. Fred grew up outside of Chicago and Cheryl, outside of Ft. Wayne. Growing up in Chicago, he is now a die-hard Cubs fanatic, a proud Blackhawks fan, and a frustrated Bears follower. His 3 favorite NFL teams are “The Bears, The Colts, and whoever plays the Packers.”

When there is spare time, Fred likes to golf, watch Dr. Who, and play various party card games. He “loves” deep dish pizza and Chicago Italian beefs! Vacation time see him visiting the grandkids.

When asked about his new job, Mr. Willig said, “St. John is a nice place to be in fellowship with believers. The school is fantastic and the friendships with the faculty and staff are a true blessing. Thanks be to God that He prepared me for this calling and blessed me with this opportunity to serve.”
