Paul Johnson

Paul W. Johnson graduated from Concordia Teachers College, River Forest, Illinois in 1977 with a B.A. in Education.  In 1984 he received a MMusED (Master of Music Education) from the University of Evansville.  He married Pamela (Neubauer) in 1976 and they have 4 grown daughters; Paula, Heidi, Emily, and Andrea.

Mr. Johnson began his teaching ministry in 1977 when he was called to Evansville Lutheran School.  He taught 7th and 5th grade homeroom, band, and choir.  He also taught band at Trinity Lutheran School in Darmstadt, Indiana for 4 years.   At ELS he coached 7&8 boys basketball and produced an annual drama in grades 5-8.

In 1988 a call to be Director of Music at Lutheran High School Indianapolis was accepted.  He taught religion, band, choir, and traveled to 5 area Lutheran Elementary Schools to teach band.  During his time at LHSI he coached Girls Freshman and JV Volleyball, Girls Freshman and JV Basketball, Boys Freshman and JV Basketball, and was the Head Golf coach for 21 years.  Mr. J. was also the musical director for several musicals produced by the Drama Department of LHSI.

In 2013, a call to St. John Lutheran Church & School to be Director of Outreach & Assimilation and music teacher was accepted and he has served in that capacity until his retirement.  Currently he is teaching 7th Confirmation, 5-8 P.E., Band, Jr. Choir, and directs the Drama production for grades 5-8.

Paul has served the church in other capacities as well and has been involved in community music endeavors.  He has served congregations on various boards and committees and has done the same at the District level, currently serving on the Nominations Committee.  He has played Trombone in Civic Theaters, Traveling Broadway Shows, Evansville Symphonic Band, Indianapolis Brass Choir, and currently is playing in the Big Band “Serenade”.  He serves as a judge for the Indiana State Music Association and works the Marching Band State Finals every year.

“The blessings I have received in my teaching ministry are beyond my full comprehension.  Being able to serve Jesus through a variety of responsibilities has strengthened my faith enormously.  St. John has been a big part of all that I do for over 30 years, and I am eternally grateful to what the St. John family has done for me”.

Finally, none of this is possible without my loving, understanding, patient, and talented wife Pamela.  She is the cornerstone and the beacon for everything in my life for 43 years and counting.

You are invited to join us as we celebrate over 40 years of ministry and the retirement of Paul Johnson. The celebration will take place on Saturday, May 11th from 5:30-8:00 pm at St. John.
